To mark the inauguration of the Dubochet Imaging Centre in Lausanne (DCI), Olga Cafiero has chosen to take up the theme of water, a subject dear to Jacques Dubochet, but one that is resolutely removed from any scientific treatment. In collaboration with a former colleague of the researcher, she explored the most familiar and everyday forms of water: that which quenches thirst, that which stimulates (morning coffee), that which accompanies effort (sweat), that which betrays emotions (tears), and that of great celebrations (champagne).
Fascinated by the hypnotic aesthetics of electron microscopy, Cafiero turns it on its head, freeing herself from any scientific purpose. She freely colours the images, for the simple pleasure of the eye, then superimposes them on photographs from the DCI laboratory. These layers of the infinitely small are added to reality, disrupting its reading, and offering a sensitive reflection on our relationship with images, between abstraction and documentation.
Through this work, which is both poetic and sensory, Olga Cafiero offers a singular vision of the Centre Dubochet, paying tribute to the curious and generous spirit of the man who gave it its name.
